That also sounds like you've modified some other views to not show the
(generated) description).

To me, it sounds like something that's best handled as much outside of
quills as possible. A script that runs every hour that checks for
missing descriptions and that just puts the first part of the content in
the description field? That would leave most of the machinery in place
without much need for further customisation.
