I have spent some free hours this week to try to get some alternative
traversal working.  I branched from trunk to
branches/maurits-traversal.  I added a BRANCH.txt file to explain the
goal, status, etc of the branch.  See:

It is basically broken now, so don't you dare use this on a production
site. :) There is some indication that the new traversal is halfway
working, so there may be some hope for that branch.  I myself don't
feel up to the task of finishing this.  And another, more general
approach based on z3c.traverser may better suited, though it is not
clear whether that will be any easier. :)
